On Saturday, November 16, 2024, U-GIS (Unisba Global Inspired Society) hosted the International Sport Frisbee event at Taman Saparua Park. Several U-GIS members, staff from the International office, and even random passersby joined in on the event.
The International Sports Frisbee is one of U-GIS’s signature programs, successfully held for the first time this academic year. In Indonesia, this sport is still commonly unheard of compared to mainstream sports like badminton and soccer. Frisbee, also known as Ultimate Frisbee, is a sport played with a flying disc where two teams aim to score points by passing the disc into the opponent’s end zone. The event emphasized not only competition but also the spirit of teamwork, cultural interaction, and camaraderie—core values of U-GIS. But on this occasion, it could not be done due to space limitations.
During the event, participants were introduced to the basics of Frisbee, including throwing techniques. Guided by Mr. Rama, a staff from the International office with extensive experience in Frisbee, the participants embraced this new experience.
Although some participants were trying Frisbee for the first time, the atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm and joy throughout the activity.
Apart from the game itself, the event served as a platform to strengthen the bond between U-GIS members. “My first experience playing Frisbee was both fun and challenging. I didn’t expect that throwing a round disc would be harder than it looks, and I thought I wouldn’t be able to play perfectly in just one day. Throwing and catching the Frisbee felt tricky, but that’s what made it exciting. Playing in a public space added an extra challenge, as we had to ensure the Frisbee didn’t hit anyone nearby. Throughout the game, I laughed a lot at missed throws and failed catches, but those moments created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with my friends and even Mr. Rama. Frisbee is such a simple game yet brings so much joy and sweat—it made me want to play it again. “Said Azzahra, U-GIS member.
The event also received positive feedback from the local community, who joined in. Their presence added to the lively atmosphere and demonstrated that sports like Frisbee can be an enjoyable alternative activity while introducing new cultural experiences in Indonesia.
Through programs like this, U-GIS hopes to continue inspiring students and the community to embrace new experiences and expand their global perspectives. At the end of the event, all participants agreed that activities like this should continue, not only to promote Frisbee as a sport but also to strengthen cross-cultural connections.
Their impressions when playing Frisbee:
“Frisbee is unique, I know the frisbee from SpongeBob with the name “flying saucer,” and it turns out that playing it is fun!!.” Daffa, U-GIS member.
“It’s actually not my first time playing Frisbee, but i did have fun so much with those who played it for the first time! Frisbee just gathers us together always with” Sely, U-GIS member.
“My first impression, I thought frisbee was American Football/rugby hahaha, I don’t know what frisbee is and it was really difficult to play. Until finally I got used to it”. Aldi, U-GIS member.
Interesting moments playing Frisbee:
“An interesting moment yesterday when Io’s frisbee hit someone’s head and we immediately bullied Io hehe, positive bullying of course.” Daffa, U-GIS member.
” I have played with international students from various countries with ugisian too and still have so much fun! It’s a light sport yet so enjoyable, and i love that moment most when playing Frisbee!” Sely, U-GIS member
Criticism and suggestions:
“Hopefully in the future, when we play frisbee, the people around us will not be selfish and indifferent, meaning they will take care of themselves, just like when someone plays football, they will avoid them, because we are also playing on a field which is used for public activities such as sports.” Daffa, U-GIS member.
“Yesterday the place wasn’t comfortable 🙁 better at the park in DU during the first frisbee ugis, forgot the name… but it was a good job for the first timer executioner” Sely, UGIS member.
“I suggest that maybe you can do a survey and ask first about the availability of the field, to be honest yesterday was fun but it just didn’t feel solemn enough so it’s a bit of a shame.” Aldi, U-GIS member.
