A Day of Games, Food, and Friendship
On March 21st, 2025, UGIS came together to celebrate a unique and unforgettable event – Ngabuborit Day! This special event was designed to bring people together, foster connections, and create lasting memories. This event was adapted from the Sundanese Culture of “Ngabuburit”, which is a period where local Muslims await for Iftar while doing productive activities. During this event, we decided to play board games among ourselves as a form of home internationalization.
The event took place at the URP Studio and started at 2:00 p.m. Attendees were treated to an exciting afternoon of international board games, fun and excitement, and new relations. To add Ramadhan vibes, we had a dress code, which was a Ramadhan snack-inspired theme. The atmosphere was electric, with participants laughing, competing, and bonding over their shared love of games.
“I got a new experience of ngabuburit differently because I used to play traditional games since I was a kid, but after trying international board games, it turned out to be fun even though a lot of thinking, which made it more fun and not boring,” said Gina as a player, a student from Faculty of Communication Science.
Experience
Ngabuburit, playing board games, was a memorable moment for all of us as we got to know each other better and made new friends.
“The most memorable moment was when I played the “Trial by Trolley” game with Ugisian Friends,” said Fadil, a player and a student from the Faculty of Engineering.
“It was super fun! The people are so nice, and I can easily blend in with them. Taboo was my most memorable moment; we can read each other’s minds with lots of laughter,” said Vania, a player and student from Institut Pertanian Bogor.
During this event, we had five fun games in total that are ready to be played, which are :
1.Sounds Fishy
Sounds Fishy is a fun game; players take turns coming up with weird answers to bizarre questions, and it’s up to you to guess which ones are fake. But be careful one player is telling the truth, and to earn points, we have to limit the wrong answers. This game can lead to a fun discussion about the interesting facts on the fact cards.
2. Code Names
Code Names is a spy-tacular game! In Code Names, opposing spymasters must use clever clues and clever thinking to help their teammates identify secret agents hidden behind a grid of cryptic words. This game can bring out the chemistry between players and how well they understand each other from one word.
3. Herd Mentality
Herd Mentality is a perfect game for families and friends. The goal is for us to think like the herd and match our answers with the squads. When you’re part of the majority, you’ll be rustling up cows in no time. But if you’re the lone cowpoke with a unique answer, you’ll be stuck with the angry Pink Cow, and your herd of cows will be worthless until you can pass it off to someone else.
4. Taboo
Taboo is a fun word-guessing challenge like no other! In Taboo, players take turns describing a mystery word to their teammates without using the word itself or a few forbidden keywords. This game can bring out good chemistry between players and see how well they understand each other.
5. Trial by Trolley
Trial by Trolley is a fun game that will put your morals to the test! Trial by Trolley takes the infamous Trolley Problem to new extremes, forcing you to make tough decisions and justify your choices. Choose one, plead for the lives of those on your track, sabotage your opponents, or take on the role of conductor and make the ultimate life or death decisions. This fun game can lead to heated and interesting debates and discussions.
“I really liked it when we tried the trial by trolley game to make nonsensical reasons to defend our arguments because even though we were tired, we had fun by ourselves complaining, getting new fun facts, and engaging more with each other’s alibis, it was really fun”. Said Selly, a player and a student from the Faculty of Psychology.
“My favorite part was when we played sounds fishy because you have to find who doesn’t lie, then think of the wrong answer, but it’s pretty tricky because they have similar answers, it’s really challenging,” said Gina as a general participant.
A Resounding Success
Ngabuborit Day was a resounding success, with attendees praising the event’s warm and welcoming atmosphere. The activity organizer (algojo) did an outstanding job of creating a fun and inclusive environment, which ensured that everyone had an amazing time.
“It was crazy fun, even though it started at 2 o’clock, but because we had so much fun that even though I tried 3 board games, I still feel like I want more! A big thumbs up also to the algojos for the best vibes board game yesterday!” said Selly, a member of UGIS.
“It’s super fun and exhausting at the same time because we have to play the game while holding thirst and hunger.” Said Fadil as a general participant.
Breaking Fast and Breaking Barriers
Ngabuborit Day was more than just a social event; it was also a celebration of the values that bring us together. By breaking fast together, participants were able to connect with one another on a deeper level and foster a sense of community and belonging.
Evaluation
Some people were very satisfied with Ngabuborit and are looking forward to the next Ugis agenda, especially board games.
“Keep up the good work, and bring up more and more fun games,” said Fadil, a general participant.
“Try to beat the best vibes and experience of board game this time, can you?” said Selly, a member of UGIS.
“I couldn’t ask for more; it was fun, and all the board games were so exciting,” said Vania, a general participant.
See you next time!
Ngabuborit just ended, with everyone feeling happy and having fun with the beautiful, colorful participants’ outfits inspired by the Ramadhan snack theme. We’re happy to meet a lot of amazing people, and we hope more people will come to our upcoming events. May this Ngabuborit be the first step towards our next fun meeting. Until then, stay wonderful, and see you!
